NBA 2k21 review:

Any athlete will tell you that you can do everything correctly in the off-season and yet fall short. With NBA 2K21, Visual Concepts clearly strived to improve their game and give better outcomes. This wasn't, however, a usual off-season for Visual Concepts; the team wasn't only aiming to take NBA 2K to the next level; it was also attempting to take it to the next generation, as the first sports game to fully embrace the PS5 and Xbox Series X's new hardware capability. The end result is a gallant effort, full of wonderful new features and tremendous visual leaps, but it's evident that the playbook still needs more seasoning and modifications.

Visual Concepts launched a PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia version of NBA 2K21 in early September, but this next-gen edition was developed from the ground up to take use of the new hardware. Some features from the previous release are carried over, such as the majority of Junior's MyCareer tale, but it also includes new modes and crucial improvements including smoother movement and more realistic contact. Most notably, the series' notoriously high load times are no longer an issue.
Games load in a matter of seconds, putting you right in the middle of the action. The only snags I encountered were when my player went to the bench for a substitute and between quarters; your player may simply stand steadfastly for a few moments throughout this transition. It detracts from the immersion because everything else works as it should in a genuine arena, with a raucous crowd and workers performing various chores.

Aside from a few minor glitches, Visual Concepts continues to produce fantastic gameplay that looks and feels like it belongs in the NBA. The new-generation technology has only added to the on-court action's authenticity and variation. Ball-handling feels terrific and gives you a lot of alternatives when you can change the tempo of your dribble and size-up techniques. I loved being able to throw defenders off with hesitations, escapes, stepbacks and crosses, and this new dribble rapidly became my favorite update.

Passes, particularly alley-oops off the glass to teammates, appear more lifelike. A new lead-pass concept, combined with the addition of bounce-touch passes, ensures that scenarios can be played in a variety of ways.

Certain players have hallmark techniques, just as in previous entries, and Visual Concepts has only extended to realism with new skills like LeBron James' suspended dribble. It's interesting how players move and play differently based on who they are, what position they play, and how they're constructed. Every player model astonished me with its level of detail, from their resemblance to their real-life counterparts to their facial expressions and dripping sweat in critical situations. NBA 2K21 is without a doubt one of the most visually appealing games on the latest consoles.

Another highlight is The W, which allows you to create your own WNBA MyPlayer and develop your own route to stardom by playing for one of the league's 12 teams for the first time. The level of detail in this mode is excellent, and I enjoyed learning more about the league and its players from the announcers, and the games differ from those in the NBA in that they are more technical and team-oriented. The W doesn't have the same cinematic experience as the main MyPlayer option, but you may still increase your popularity, wealth, team chemistry, and growth by volunteering for a youth program or streaming NBA 2K21 on your day off.

You must complete your own tale by making little decisions, connecting with other players via text messages, and updating your social media feed, but the meat of the game is focused on becoming a visible role model and attracting other young girls to the sport, which I think is excellent. I simply wish it had its own standalone plot, and I'm upset that your female MyPlayer isn't allowed to enter the major multiplayer area, The City. Although you can play with other players in The W Online, playing in a small gym isn't the same as having access to a large number of shops and courts.

The City is a follow-up to The Neighborhood, in which players gather in a multiplayer location with their MyPlayers to play pick-up games and shop. The City is a major draw, and it's only available in this next-gen edition of the game. You're allocated to an alliance and help build up its reputation by participating in events, so it's evident that Visual Concepts has huge plans for it.
I adore traveling through this vast metropolis, stumbling onto special vendors selling one-of-a-kind clothing, and unlocking special challenges, such as joining up with cover star Damian Lillard to take on legends, Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter. You may also spin a wheel for a daily log-in bonus, which includes exciting goodies.

I recently received a free tattoo, which made me happy because paying VC (which you can earn in-game or purchase with real money) isn't my thing, especially when it comes to cosmetic goods. Unfortunately, if you're like me, you'll either have to work for something cool or hope for good luck when spinning the wheel – though I've yet to acquire a high-tier item that way. Good things are pricey, and grinding for them necessitates an excessive amount of patience; it feels like a clear attempt to push players toward microtransactions, which is disgusting.

The city is an interesting concept, but it is also where the most serious issues arise. To access The City, you must first raise your position in Rookieville by accumulating wins. This is depressing since you're trapped in a secluded region where you can't go anywhere in The City and must instead wait for games and play with others. Losses have little impact on your ranking, so every game seems like a battle for a spot in the show. Many players I encountered had clearly purchased VC to improve their character's attributes and give themselves the best possible advantage - making it much more difficult to win if you don't pay real money.

I rarely came into a player who wasn't ranked 86 or above while I wandered about Rookieville. Badges confuse things even more because they allow you to take ridiculous shots or evade easy steals. This has made me dislike internet gaming because the games do not play out in a fair or realistic manner. They're just not enjoyable. Players don't want to pass the ball and just shoot all day with these modifiers, therefore Visual Concepts needs to think out a better approach to incentivize teamwork. It's becoming a bigger issue, especially as online gaming becomes more popular.

Aside from these annoyances, you may expect the other basic modes as well as some adjustments. My NBA, which combines MyGM, MyLeague, and MyLeague Online, is now an all-encompassing franchise mode. It allows you more personalization options than ever before, including the ability to toggle particular league regulations and skip some of the tedious role-playing parts. Even though I love the updated boom/bust mechanism and greater variance in player potentials, MyGM still needs a thorough redesign.
I also liked that there are some little differences from the previous generation, such as a new path in Junior's MyPlayer tale where you can join the G-League and meet some of the series' fictional characters.

The full-team on-court action in NBA 2K21 is better than it's ever been, and the graphics jump is stunning as well, but it still falls short in a few important areas. Microtransactions continue to ruin what should be an enjoyable aspect of the game since Visual Concepts hasn't figured out a decent method to improve its online play. I enjoy making great plays and the rush of nailing a buzzer-beating three, but that feeling vanishes the instant I enter the internet world. It's no longer about the passion of the game, but about the money.
